Mercy Joel lives with her uncle. Her father was killed by rebels and then her mother remarried and stays in the village. The uncle cares for ten total children. He is a builder.

Mercy Joel helps by cooking, washing dishes, and fetching water. Her favorite subject in school is social studies and her favorite game is volleyball. She aspires to be a teacher.
